AIRPORTS CASE STUDY

MEETING THE PRESENT AND FUTURE NEEDS FOR AIRPORT INFRASTRUCURE WITH RECYCLED STEEL

Modern air travel is seeing significant growth in both domestic and global passenger volumes. However, this travel boom is exposing the limits of America’s aging airport infrastructure—with over-crowded terminals, insufficient parking and limited flight availability. As a result, there is heightened focus on building new facilities with future-minded materials, including Nucor’s innovative and sustainable steel solutions.

Airports across North America have begun a dramatic transformation—replacing and rebuilding decades-old passenger terminals and transportation systems to align with the new landscape of travel and technology. The benefits of new airports will extend well beyond greater passenger capacity and convenience; they stimulate local economic growth, jobs, investment and tourism. Delivering these benefits requires significant amounts of materials—with a single airport terminal requiring thousands of tons of steel.

A MORE SUSTAINABLE SOURCE OF STEEL

Nucor is meeting today’s enormous travel demand with a circular manufacturing process that uses steel from the past. As North America’s largest recycler, we leverage electric arc furnace (EAF) technology to transform scrap steel from things like old cars and trucks, decommissioned bridges and other end-of-life infrastructure into modern steel products for use in new construction projects including airports.

This circular process has been core to Nucor’s steelmaking approach for over 50 years and is infinitely repeatable, meaning the materials that we’ll depend on for generations will be recycled versions of the steel already in use today.

AN INDUSTRY-LEADING PORTFOLIO FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF AIRPORTS

As a key supplier to renowned projects such as New York’s JFK and LaGuardia airports’ multi-billion-dollar redevelopments and the reimagining of the Salt Lake City International Airport, Nucor has the proven experience and technical expertise needed to construct the next generation of airports. Providing a range of sustainable steel products and solutions for each project, Nucor is supporting the construction of state-of-the-art facilities that will enhance global travel for years to come.

Nucor understands the needs and opportunities of modern airport construction and as America’s largest steel manufacturer and recycler, provides a robust range of steel products to ensure project success. From high-strength structural steel for new terminals, to the rebar needed to reinforce new parking structures, Nucor’s innovative construction solutions can help architects, engineers and construction professionals exceed their project goals, all backed with the surety of supply and speed to market of the largest domestic steel supply chain.
