All Nucor poles comply with ASCE 48-19 and RUS Bulletin 1724E-214 (2019) and RUS Bulletin 1780-26 (2024). Specifications include: 

• All steel is ASTM A871 Grade 65 for weathering poles and ASTM A572 Grade 65 for galvanized poles
• All pole sections are slip-jointed with a 12-sided (dodecagon) cross-section. Flange joint connections between sections can be added to meet design requirements.
• Each pole class offers a uniform top diameter and taper and consistent top section lengths to facilitate stocking and field installation.

A monopole is a self-supporting vertical steel pole used in the utility industry for transmission infrastructure. It has a smaller footprint than lattice towers, making it ideal for urban spaces. A substation is a critical part of the electrical grid that transforms voltage levels and distributes electricity between power generation sources and end users. Its strength, corrosion resistance and ability to withstand extreme weather conditions make steel an ideal material for long-term performance and grid reliability. 

Structure submerged arc (or subarc) welding is a process in which the arc from the welding torch is contained under the flux using a machine called a longitudinal seamer (long seamer). After the process, the flux is vacuumed up and recycled. 

Steel poles or wood pole equivalents (WPEs) offer superior durability by resisting rot, pests and weather-related damage while providing higher strength and fire resistance. Nucor steel is made in America from recycled materials using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, making it a sustainable and reliable choice for utility applications. 

Galvanization is a process where steel is dipped into molten zinc, which reacts and bonds with the steel to form a protective layer against corrosion, giving it a finished light grey or silver color. 

Weathering structures are structures that are made to intentionally rust by blasting their surface and letting them oxidize. The result is an intentional rust-like finish called patina, which prevents additional corrosion. 

Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) provides a shiny finish and superior corrosion resistance with minimal maintenance, which can be beneficial for harsh environments like coastal or high-moisture areas. Weathering steel develops a protective patina, offering a lower-maintenance, rustic aesthetic but performs best in dry climates. The choice depends on durability needs, environmental exposure, and long-term maintenance expectations. 

Below-grade coating for steel poles is a protective layer applied to the portion of the pole that is buried underground. This coating prevents corrosion by shielding the steel from moisture, soil and other environmental factors for long-term durability and structural integrity. Nucor offers CorroCote™, a polyurethane coating system for below-grade protection, available upon request.
