Both hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel undergo a similar process in the initial phase of production. After recycled metals are melted down to create new steel using EAF technology, our sheet mills move the liquid steel to a caster to make a slab. That red-hot slab is then transferred directly into a mill where it is rolled into a steel coil known as hot-rolled steel. Some customers use hot-rolled steel as-is or purchase it pickled and oiled to prevent corrosion.

To produce cold-rolled sheet, the metal undergoes an additional rolling process, where it is rolled at cooler temperatures into a thin steel sheet, altering its surface, mechanical and microstructural properties. Cold-rolled steel can be galvanized with zinc or galvannealed with zinc and a heat treatment to prevent further rust and corrosion.  

Nucor manufactures two basic types of cold-rolled steel, including cold rolled full hard (CRFH) and cold rolled annealed products, along with a variety of cold rolled (CR) steels, and each of those types can be further broken down into additional CR products. 

Nucor does not offer a gauge chart, because we focus on the specific nominal or minimum decimal thickness of the sheet, not the gauge.
