Redefining what it means to be safe

We are no longer satisfied with zero injuries and illnesses. We now focus on going BEYOND ZERO. Beyond Zero is our new standard of excellence. Beyond Zero means we don’t just target zero injuries and illnesses, but zero near misses, zero property damage, and zero potential for incidents.

Here’s a great example, the year before our shift to Beyond Zero, a total of 18 hazards were reported at Nucor Steel Kankakee. One year later, the total went up to 110 and is climbing each year. Why? Because Kankakee’s teammates now view potential hazards as soon to be incidents, and they are learning to identify, report, and remove these hazards before they become an incident. In other words, they are learning to see Beyond Zero. It’s simply a matter of approaching safety with the idea of identifying the unsafe incident or behavior prior to it happening.
